Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Team will take a three-game win streak and a four-game unbeaten string into next weekend's CT Ice tournament at Martire
Family Arena thanks to a 6-3 win over AIC tonight and a special teams-powered sweep of the weekend series.
A pair of graduate students combined for eight points in front of 3,112 on the SHU campus. Left wing
Tyler Ghirardosi hit the net twice and had four points, while center
Matthew Guerra contributed a goal and three helpers as the first-place Pioneers added to their Atlantic Hockey America lead.
The Pios, who scored four on the man advantage this weekend while killing off all but one for AIC, erased an early deficit on their second power play chance in the closing seconds of the opening frame.
Felix Trudeau got his stick on a
Mikey Adamson shot from the high slot with five seconds left.
John Jaworski set up Adamson with a great feed that extended his point streak to four games and gave him four helpers this weekend.
SHU, which went into intermission at 1-1, had some special teams work to do early in the second with a two-man disadvantage. Sophomore goalie
Cullen DeYoung, who had 27 saves tonight and two wins this weekend, came up big with two stops before thwarting another power play later in the second.
The home squad evened the score late in the second with another man-advantage. This time it was Ghirardosi pouncing on a rebound in the low slot after a Guerra re-direction of a
John Driscoll (2 assists) blast from the point bounced off AIC goalie
Chase Clark's pads.
The Pioneers, who were back in their school crest gray jerseys equaling their win total of 2023-24, cashed in on a rush to grab their first lead of the night in the third period.
Marcus Joughin sent a crossing pass that got a piece of
Jake Bongo's stick as he was crossing the slot. The puck never changed direction, and
Cole Galata reeled it in from the left circle and snapped it glove side for a 3-2 advantage.
The third straight tally by Sacred Heart came off a draw won backwards by Guerra to Ghirardosi who fired glove side again at 9:04.
"We found a way in the third to get it done," said Ghirardosi, who can now look toward CT Ice. "Some good teams coming in our building, and we get a chance to prove how good of a team we are, so we're looking forward to it."
SHU made it four consecutive with its third power-play goal. A nifty, behind the back pass by Ghirardosi hit
Hunter Sansbury in stride in the lower left circle for a one-timer that hit the same side of the cage.
Guerra put the exclamation point on the victory with an empty netter from mid ice.
"It was a great weekend, huge six points for us in league play," said Guerra. "You gotta get wins every weekend, so it's a big sweep for us. It's also a good springboard for us into CT Ice."
The Pios skate against Yale next Friday night in the second game of CT Ice at Martire Family Arena.
