Stewart Records 1,000th Point in Men's Basketball Setback with Saint Peter's

Amiri Stewart scored 21, leading three Pios in double figures
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Senior guard Amiri Stewart tallied his 1,000th career point, leading the Sacred Heart men's basketball team with 21, in its 66-61 home loss to Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) in the Pitt Center.
Anquan Hill (13) and Tanner Thomas (10) also added double-figure performances for the Pioneers. Stewart went 5-for-9 from the field and 10-for-13 from the free throw line, while Hill shot an impressive 80% (4-5) from behind the arc.

With a three-pointer for Saint Peter's to take a seven-point lead five minutes into play, Sacred Heart scored six straight free throws to pull within one at 13:16. The Peacocks responded with four straight to take a 16-11 advantage, but Amiri Stewart answered with four consecutive points of his own to pull SHU within one, once again.
After a four-point edge for Saint Peter's, Griffin Barrouk sparked a 7-0 run for the Pios to come from behind and take a three-point lead, 22-19. Throughout the following six minutes, neither team led by more than one before Saint Peter's was able to break a 24-24 tie and go on an 8-0 run for a 32-24 edge at the half.
Through the opening minutes of the second half, a Tanner Thomas layup brought the Pioneers within three, twice, but each time, the Peacocks answered to jump ahead by five.
A three-pointer at 14:57 gave Saint Peter's its first and only double-digit lead of the day, 45-35, but Thomas and Anquan Hill scored back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to four, 45-41. However, the visitors answered again with a pair of free throws, but a Mekhi Conner triple brought SHU within three at 11:42.
Saint Peter's led by no more than seven until a good layup put them ahead, 57-49, at 3:39. In the final minutes of play, SHU pulled within four twice, but Saint Peter's had an answer each time. A pair of made free throws put the visitors up by eight with eight seconds remaining, but a Stewart triple cut the deficit to five for the 66-61 final.

Sacred Heart will make its two-game trip to Buffalo, N.Y. next week, starting with Canisius on Thursday, January 23 at 7:00 pm, followed by Niagara on Saturday, January 25 at 2:00 pm.
