Fairfield, Conn. - Senator Tony Hwang honored Sacred Heart University's Cheerleading team for winning their fifth UCA National Championship in six years with a tour of the State Capitol.
SHU earned first place in the All-Girl Division 1 Game Day Division at Disney World in Orlando, scoring 98 out of 100 and defeating 22 teams.
Head Coach C.J. Rodriguez, who has guided SHU to five championships in nine years, said, "Winning our fifth national title in six years is a remarkable accomplishment. These student athletes are so dedicated and hardworking. We are so proud to have them representing the program and our university. The routine they performed was special and unique to them. They truly had so much fun doing it, which is most important."
Their victory was celebrated with a reception upon their return and a trip to the State Capitol, an experience the team won't forget.
"It was a wonderful experience for our student-athletes," Rodriguez said. "We greatly appreciate Senator Tony Hwang for the invitation. It's not often that your state senator invites you to the Capitol with the opportunity to tour the building, learn about Connecticut's history, and get recognized in the House and Senate chambers."
