SHU finished one point shy of tying the all-time scoring mark
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In one of the most dominant performances in program history, the Sacred Heart University women's rugby team rolled to a 121-14 victory over LIU on Saturday at Park Ave Field.
For the first time since 2019, the Pioneers crossed the century mark, finishing one point shy of tying the program record. SHU's all-time scoring mark is 122 in a 122-0 drubbing of Molloy on Oct. 26, 2019.
It took the Pios just 2:10 to open the scoring this morning, as a Caroline Woelfel try and a Reese Torticill conversion made it 7-0 Sacred Heart early.
Julia Arnone extended the SHU lead with a try at 6:37, as the junior hooker/flanker broke through multiple tackles for a long run. Torticill made it 14-0 with a second consecutive made conversion.
After LIU tallied its first try to make it 14-7 at 15:28, SHU needed just 24 seconds after the following kickoff to put more points on the scoreboard. The Sharks turned the ball over on the Pios' side as Olivia Woods snatched the ball from an opposing player before handing it to her sister Reece Woods for a walk-in try. Torticill again nailed the conversion to make it 21-7 Pioneers.
Maria-Jean Paulino, Megan Chura (2x), Gabrielle Ferreira, Charlotte Dauser and R. Woods all continued SHU's strong play with trys in the first half. Torticill finished the opening 40 minutes 7-for-9 on conversions as the Pios put 59 points on the scoreboard. A late try by the Sharks set the score at 59-14 heading into the break.
The Pios did not take their feet off the gas in the second half, as Marley Gurmendi scored a try less than a minute into the frame to make it 64-14.
SHU added eight more trys in the second half to secure a dominant 121-14 victory. Carrie Coyer-Westerberg tallied three trys, Torticill scored two, and Dauser, Tara McWilliams and Ava Steed all scored one.
Torticill finished the afternoon 13-for-17 on conversions, capping an impressive scoring day for the junior. Torticill accounted for 36 of the team's 121 points.
Today's game concluded the Pios' 15's regular season. Stay tuned to the SHU athletics website and the team's social media pages for more information about the Pioneers' 7's slate.
