First-year running back adds another postseason honor
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Sacred Heart University football running back Mitchell Summers continues to stack on the postseason honors, earning a spot on the All-New England Team as announced Sunday by the New England Football Writers' Association.
The Greensboro, N.C. product has been on a tear all season. He was recently named one of just 25 finalists for the Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, given annually to the top freshman in the FCS. Summers has already claimed the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week and the New England Football Writers Gold Helmet Award thanks to his explosive breakout performance against Howard earlier in the season.
Summers has been a driving force for the Pioneers all season, emerging as one of the top young playmakers in the FCS. He has totaled 1,071 rushing yards on 198 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per attempt while scoring 12 touchdowns. His signature moment came in the win over Howard, where he exploded for a career-high 243 yards and two touchdowns, highlighted by an electrifying 80-yard score. His consistency has been just as impactful, recording four 100+ rushing yard games, including a crucial 147-yard outing in the victory over Merrimack, pushing him past the 1,000-yard milestone and securing his place in the SHU record book.
The All-New England Team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Sheraton Framingham (Mass.) Hotel and Conference Center. Reservations must be made no later than 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, and may be made at https://newenglandfootballwriters.com/captains-%26-awards-banquet. Tickets are $75/person. All attendees, including award recipients, are required to make a reservation. Reservations are made on-line only and are non-refundable.
