Kenny Selby, Maximus Mongelli, Cole DeMagistris, Evan Scribner, and Curtis Whiting named captains
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Following the conclusion of spring practices, Sacred Heart University head football coach Mark Nofri has announced the team captains for the upcoming 2025 season. Kenny Selby, Maximus Mongelli, Cole De Magistris, Evan Scribner, and Curtis Whiting have been selected for their outstanding leadership, consistent performance, and unwavering commitment to the program.
"These young men have consistently demonstrated what it means to be a SHU football player," said Nofri. "They've earned the trust of their teammates, and we're excited to see them lead us into the 2025 season."
Selby, a consistent force in the Pioneers' backfield, appeared in all 11 games last season. His impressive performance included 34 tackles, with 21 solo and 13 assisted stops. The Vineland, New Jersey native led the team with seven pass breakups, a season-high four against Mercyhurst, and forced a fumble against Norfolk State.
Mongelli saw action in 10 games for SHU as a defensive back. The Roslyn, New York native finished third on the team with 50 tackles following 31 solo and 19 assisted stops. Mongelli broke up a pair of passes against Mercyhurst and LIU and forced a fumble against the Sharks.
Mongelli's and Selby's presence in the defensive backfield was key in helping the Pioneers finish the season ranked fifth nationally in red zone defense and team passing efficiency defense at the NCAA Division I level.
Whiting appeared in four games, recording three kick return attempts for 54 yards, including a season-long 25-yard return at Howard. On offense, Whiting added three rushing attempts while also making an impact on special teams with a tackle.
De Magistris and Scribner anchored the SHU's offensive line in 2024, starting all 11 games and forming a dominant tandem up front. Their consistency, physicality, and leadership were instrumental in powering a ground game that averaged 180.2 rushing yards per game, ranking 30th in NCAA Division I. Behind their efforts, the offense totaled 3,203 yards and 24 touchdowns, including 18 scores on the ground, while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.
The Pioneers kick off the 2025 campaign on Saturday, August 30th, with their home opener against Stonehill. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM at Campus Field.
