
Varano ‘17 Helps Italian National Team Win IIHF Women’s World 1-B Championship

Selected as Player of Game in win over Slovenia and scored four goals in tournament
DUMFRIES, Great Britain – Amie Varano '17, the captain of the 2016-17 Sacred Heart women's hockey team, helped lead the Italian National Team to the IIHF World 1-B Championship. Italy posted a perfect 5-0 record on its way to the title, winning all five games by shutout and outscoring its opponents 31-0. The victory secured Italy a promotion into Group A next season.
Varano made a significant contribution to the championship. She was selected as the Player of the Game in the win over Slovenia and had the most goals (4) by a defender in the tournament.
At Sacred Heart, Varano led the 2016-17 team to a 20-9-2 record as a senior. She tied for third on the team with 15 assists and also contributed five goals.
Since graduation, Varano has enjoyed a very successful professional career in Europe, including stops in Hungary, Italy and Austria.
