Pioneers Open Against Defending National Champion Vermont; MAAC Adopts New Format
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team has announced its full 2025 schedule, which features a high-profile season opener and a restructured conference format under the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The Pioneers, led by head coach Anthony Anzevui, will kick off the 2025 campaign on the road against defending 2024 NCAA National Champion Vermont on Thursday, August 21. Sacred Heart will then return home for its opener at the newly renovated Park Ave Field on August 29 against Yale.
The 16-game regular season includes seven home matches, 10 MAAC contests, and a non-conference slate designed to test the squad ahead of league play.
Non-conference matches against Big East opponents include road tests at Seton Hall and St. John's.
MAAC home games feature Merrimack, Mount St. Mary's, Canisius, Iona, and crosstown rival Fairfield.
This season brings significant changes to MAAC men's soccer scheduling and postseason qualification. Each team plays 10 of the 12 conference opponents, with two teams randomly excluded from each schedule. Only six teams will qualify for the MAAC Championship, a shift from the previous eight-team format. The new structure emphasizes every match's significance, especially with fewer playoff spots at stake.
The MAAC postseason begins with quarterfinals on November 9, followed by semifinals on November 13, and will conclude with the championship game on November 16.
