Smith and Sheehy deliver opening pinfalls as Pioneers battle to final match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacred Heart University men's wrestling jumped out to a commanding start and carried the lead deep into the dual, but Brown University rallied late to secure a 22-18 decision on Sunday afternoon.

Of Note:
The Pioneers seized early momentum with back-to-back pinfalls to open the match. At 125 pounds, Caden Smith put Sacred Heart on the board in emphatic fashion, recording a fall over Chase Yasutake at 6:41.

One bout later at 133, John Sheehy energized the SHU bench with a quick pin of Douglas Shipers at 3:23, giving the Pioneers a 12-0 advantage.

Brown answered with consecutive decision victories at 141 and 149 to trim Sacred Heart's lead to 12-6.

At 157, Felix Lettini delivered a strong showing for the Pioneers, earning a 6-2 decision over Eli Carr to extend the margin to 15-6.

The Bears closed the gap with a major decision at 165 and a sudden-victory win at 174, but Sacred Heart responded at 184. Hunter Perez controlled the bout against Thomas Sandoval, posting an 8-1 decision to restore a five-point lead, 18-13.

Brown claimed a decision at 197 to cut the deficit to two points heading into the heavyweight bout. At 285, Brendan Gilchrist battled into the final period with the dual on the line before a late pin decided the outcome, 22-18.

Sacred Heart recorded four individual victories on the afternoon, including two by fall, and led the dual for the majority of the match.
