
Women’s Basketball Duo Earns All-Conference Accolades

Fairfield, Conn. – Senior Amelia Wood and first year Sophie Nascimento combined for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Conference honors as announced by the league office. Now a three-time All-Conference honoree, Wood earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team while Nascimento secured a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
In addition to the All-Conference honors for Wood and Nascimento, four additional Pioneers were named to the MAAC's All-Academic Team along with Wood. Joining her was seniors Sierra Johnson, Grace John and Faith Pappas and sophomore Dianne Crespo Lopez. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Wood's MAAC All-Conference honor joins a pair from her time in the NEC as she earned All-Rookie honors in her first season and followed that with third team accolades as a sophomore. The Wynantskill, N.Y. native leads the Pioneers and is ninth in the league with her 13.2 points per game average. In addition, she is second on the team with an average of 6.5 rebounds per game and leads the team 64 steals, 63 assists and 30 blocks.
Wood finished 22 of the 29 regular season games with double figures, combining six of those games for a double double. Among her highlights on the season, Wood set a career-high with 26 points against Niagara on New Year's Day which came just a few weeks removed of her becoming the 24th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points. Heading into the MAAC Championship, Wood stands 14th all-time in scoring while she is also among the top-10 in three-point field goals made and career steals.
Nascimento, who became a mainstay in the starting lineup six games into the season, stands fourth on the team in scoring with an average of 7.8 points per game which she increased to 8.4 ppg in MAAC play. Additionally, she is second on the team with 59 assists and 40 steals. For the season, the Scarsdale, N.Y. native finished eight games reaching double figures, including a career-high 24 which came just two days following Wood's career-high against Canisius on January 3.
Wood, Nascimento and the Pioneers will begin MAAC Championship play on Thursday as the seventh seed and will take on the tenth seeded Saint Peter's Peacocks in the first round. Tip-off from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City is slated for 2:30 p.m. with all of the action carried live on ESPN+.
