West Coast Winning! Pios Open The Joust Taking Five Set Thriller Over Idaho

Riverside, Calif. – A season-high 21 kills from sophomore outside Abbie Hagedorn led the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a five-set win over the Idaho Vandals in the opening game of The Joust hosted by Cal Baptist University. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 4-3 on the season.
Hagedorn's 21 kills is the most by any Pio this season, while she is the first player to hit the 20+ mark through the first seven matches. For the evening, Hagedorn finished with a .375 attack percentage with her 21 kills coming on 40 attempts with six errors.
Overall, the sophomore hitter was one of three players to finish in double figures with senior right side Lauren Hubert and sophomore outside Ryleigh Short following with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Hubert combined her 15 kills with 11 digs for her third double double of the season, while junior libero Miliani Villarreal finished with a team-high 19 digs.

How it Happened
SHU opened up the match with its best hitting of the night, showing no travel fatigue for the cross-country adventure. In the opening set, one that featured 16 ties and five lead changes, the Pioneers drilled 16 kills on 30 attempts with three errors for a .433 attack percentage. Hubert and Hagedorn each finished the opening game with four kills apiece, including the set winning hammer from Hagedorn. Molly Newton and Sofia Hechavarria followed with three each.
In the second set, the Vandals opened with a 6-0 rally and never trailed throughout the stanza. Sacred Heart managed to eliminate almost that entire lead, pulling withing one at 17-16 thanks to a hammer from Raissa Antonio. With one more single point advantage coming, the Vandals pulled away late to even the match at one.
Early on in the third set it would prove to be a back-and-forth battle until the Pioneers pulled away midway through the set using a pair of four-point rallies. Short would drop in a kill that provided a six-point advantage, 21-15, which the Pioneers matched once more with the final set score of 25-19. Short closed out the third set with an impressive seven kills in 10 swings with a single error for a .600 average.
Yet another see-saw battle ensued in the fourth set and it would stay that way throughout with the Vandals not pulling away until late in the match with a three-point rally that set up four match point opportunities. That late Idaho rally came after Short put down another kill that made it a one-point differential at 21-20.
Similar to the first, third and fourth sets, the fifth would feature nine ties and two lead changes before Sacred Heart earned the win-by-two victory with a kill from Hagedorn followed by a service ace from Raissa Antonio. Sacred Heart saw the biggest advantage in the final set, leading 13-9 before Idaho rallied to pull back within one and eventually force the win-by-two scenario.

Sacred Heart will return to the court two time on Friday, closing out the two-day west coast event taking on North Dakota at 5:00 p.m. (EST) and the host Lancers at 9:00 p.m. (EST).
