How it Happened
UMass struck quickly on its opening possession, going 75 yards in just 40 seconds to take a 7-0 lead on a 49-yard touchdown pass. Sacred Heart responded with a pair of possessions that moved into UMass territory before the Minutemen added to their advantage on an 82-yard punt return touchdown.
The Pioneers continued to battle in the second quarter, putting together their longest sustained drive of the first half. Sacred Heart moved 51 yards on 10 plays and held the ball for more than five minutes, reaching the UMass 29-yard line before the drive ended on downs.
UMass added a touchdown late in the half to take a 24-0 lead into the locker room.
Sacred Heart came out of halftime looking to respond, putting together a 10-play, 58-yard drive on its opening possession of the third quarter. Ryan Bocklet capped the drive with a 35-yard field goal to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard, 37-3.
UMass answered with a pair of touchdowns, including a one-yard rushing score and a 34-yard interception return, to extend its lead.
Despite the deficit, Sacred Heart kept competing throughout the fourth quarter. After the Pioneers forced UMass into a missed field goal early in the period, the offense put together its most impressive drive of the afternoon.
Starting at its own 25-yard line, Sacred Heart marched 75 yards on 15 plays, controlling the clock for 8:10. The Pioneers converted a fourth down during the drive and consistently moved the chains before Cole Snider finished the possession with a one-yard touchdown run. Bocklet added the extra point, making it 37-10 with 3:32 remaining, and capped the scoring for the game.Â
