Kelleher scores her fifth of the year

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –The Sacred Heart University women's soccer team fell to Marist for their first loss of the year, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:
This game was an offensive-heavy battle on both sides, with the action starting almost immediately. The Red Foxes struck first, finding the back of the net just four minutes into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead.

Both teams continued to trade shots and corner kicks before Shea Kelleher broke through for the Pioneers. Kelleher continued to do what she does best, finding the back of the net in the 20th minute to even the score at one.

Just 13 minutes later, it was Laperle's turn. Laperle found the back of the net off a feed from Pettigrew to give Sacred Heart its first lead of the game. After falling behind 1-0 early, the Pioneers had completely flipped the script and found themselves ahead 2-1.

Marist continued to apply pressure, firing off shots that were either saved or narrowly missed the target.

The Red Foxes nearly found the equalizer in the 39th minute when a shot drilled the top of the crossbar. Less than a minute later, however, Marist capitalized on another opportunity and found the back of the net to tie the game at two heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Mulligan took over in net for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart opened the second half aggressively. Within the first four minutes, the Pioneers generated three corner kicks and two shots as they looked to regain the lead.

In the 53rd minute, however, Marist got its opportunity. The Red Foxes found the back of the net to retake the lead, 3-2.

For the remainder of the game, Mulligan and the Pioneer defense did a good job keeping Marist off the board. Although the Red Foxes continued to create opportunities, none resulted in another goal.

The Pioneers were in a similar position on the offensive end. Sacred Heart continued to push forward and put shots on net in search of the equalizer but ultimately could not find the tying goal as Marist held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Pioneers are back in action next weekend as they will make the short trip over to New Haven to face the Yale Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 20.
