Suarez becomes the second Pioneer to earn Metro Defensive Player of the Week honors this season
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Suarez of the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team was named this week's Metro Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Suarez played a key role for the Pioneers across two road games this week, helping Sacred Heart earn a 2-1 comeback victory over FDU before battling Merrimack College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Against FDU, Suarez made three saves as the Pioneers overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to secure the road victory, and hand FDU their first loss of the season. He followed with a seven-save performance against Merrimack in the conference opener, making several key full-extension acrobatic saves to help Sacred Heart earn a point on the road.
Suarez finished the week with 10 saves across the two matches, helping the Pioneers go 1-0-1 on the week. His seven-save performance against Merrimack marked his highest save total of the season.Â
The honor marks Sacred Heart's second Defensive Player of the Week award of the 2026 season.Â
The Pioneers return to action at Park Ave Field on Saturday, September 26, to host Saint Peter's. Prior to Saturday's game, SHU will honor the senior class.Â
