NORTH EASTON, Mass. — The Sacred Heart University field hockey team won its first Northeast Conference (NEC) game of the season on Friday afternoon, topping Stonehill 2-1 in a shootout in a thrilling bout at the Skyhawks' W.B. Mason Stadium in North Easton, Mass.

Records:
Sacred Heart: 2-6, 1-1 NEC
Stonehill: 1-6, 1-1 NEC

Leaders:
Erin Lynch: 1 goal, 2 shots
Hailey Vogt: 1 assist, 4 shots
Brianna Cooper: 3 saves

Of Note:
The Pioneers found the back of the cage first, scoring at 6:09 to take a 1-0 lead. Erin Lynch netted the contest's first goal on a penalty corner, inserting the ball from the right hash before resetting near the crease to tip a Hailey Vogt shot by the moving goaltender.

The defenses took over from there, and the game went 30:30 without another goal. Unfortunately for the Pios, Havana De Roeck scored at 36:39 to send the game into the fourth tied 1-1.

Still tied after the fourth quarter, the Pios and Skyhawks went to overtime. After a scoreless OT period, SHU headed to its first shootout of the season.

Both teams scored to open the shootout, with Vogt cashing in on a penalty stroke. Rylie Wyckoff scored in the next round before Brianna Cooper got an important save. A Bridget McLaughlin score put the home team on the ropes, but the Skyhawks stayed alive with the lone goal in round four. Ahead 3-2, Blaire Sparks iced the win with a goal stick side to open round five.

Between the pipes, Cooper finished with three saves to collect her first win of the season.
