Men's Golf Begins 2026-27 Campaign at Red Bandanna Invitational

The even kicks off on Sunday morning
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After 128 days away from competition, the Sacred Heart University men's golf team opens the fall 2026 season on Sunday, Sept. 6, at the Red Bandanna Invitational, hosted by Boston College at the Turning Stone Resort Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y.
The Pioneers tallied another strong season in 2025-26, their second in the Metro Conference, taking second at the league championship after coming up just short in a thrilling comeback attempt. The Pioneers finished four strokes behind the champions from Iona, as momentum fluctuated numerous times over the back nine.
In addition to the Metro Championship, SHU tallied two more top-three finishes as a team, taking second at the SHU Fall Classic and third at the season-opening Red Bandanna Invitational.
The Pioneers will have big shoes to fill at the top of its lineup, as the team's two best golfers throughout the season, Pablo Lacayo and Mike Rothberg, graduated this past spring. The duo led the team in adjusted average and spent a majority of the year as the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the lineup.
The first golfer who will need to step up is sophomore Ronan Mooney, who tallied the team's third-best adjusted average last season (75.5). The Holden, Mass., competed in 29 rounds over 10 tournaments last year, finishing a season-best T4th at the Red Bandana Invitational.
Sho Suzuki should also be a staple in the lineup in 2026-27, as he enters his senior season. The Yokohama, Japan, native maintained a 76.9 adjusted average over 23 rounds last year, as he was tied with Mooney for SHU's third-best showing at the Metro Championship (T13th).
In addition to the Pios returners, Sacred Heart added a talented incoming class of first years and transfers. The transfers include James Bradley from Coker University and Andrew Hahn from Kenyon College. Bradley held a 74.61 average over 18 rounds as a sophomore with the Cobras, while Hahn's average sat at 72.93 in 14 rounds during his debut season with the Owls.
SHU also brings in three first years who will have a chance to make the lineup on day one. Brody DiBeneditto, a local student from Watertown, Conn., had the best summer of the group, as he qualified for the 126th United States Amateur Championship at the Merion Golf Club. The U.S. Amateur is the leading annual golf tournament in the United States for amateur golfers. Brooks Hansen heads to SHU from Jupiter, Fla., and Thomas Buchard comes from Dubai, and both bring impressive careers before even getting to college.
The Pioneers will have the fall slate to figure out their lineup before the Metro Conference Championships in the spring. Following the Red Bandana Invitational, SHU next heads to the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate (Sept. 19-20), then the UConn Invitational (Sept. 27-29). Sacred Heart then kicks off October at the Testudo Cup, hosted by Maryland on Oct. 5-6, before concluding the fall by hosting the SHU Fall Classic at the Great River Golf Club on Oct. 12-13.
