
Pioneers Off To Best Start in Division I Heading to Marquette on Saturday

The Storyline...Sacred Heart is riding a four-game winning streak and off to their best start since joining the ranks of Division I in 1999-00, as they head into Saturday afternoon's first-ever meeting with the Marquette University Golden Eagles. The Pioneers are coming off a 59-43 win over Wagner this past Saturday in the Northeast Conference opener for both clubs. Senior Ashley Durmer posted season-highs in points (16) and rebounds (6) to lead SHU to their first conference victory of the year. Durmer was selected Sacred Heart Athlete-of-the-Week for her efforts and is second on the team averaging 10.6 ppg. The senior guard has been the Pioneers leading threat from three-point land this season, knocking down 43.3% (13-30) of her shots behind the arc. Fellow senior co-captain Brooke Kelly has paced the Pioneers this season putting up 13.6 points and grabbing 5.2 rebound per-game. SHU has gotten solid play from its bench all season led by junior Kate Maher and freshman Nicolle Rubino. Maher is averaging 23.4 minutes per game and is fourth on the team in scoring with 7.4 points per outing. Rubino is third on the squad in scoring, averaging 10.2 points while making 2.2 steals a game. Marquette is riding a four-game win streak of their own, coming off a 74-63 win over Virginia Commonwealth Wednesday evening. The Golden Eagles have four players averaging double figures on the year led by senior center Rachel Klug who is getting 16.3 points per outing.
