FAIRFIELD, CT (October 8, 2003) - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2003 Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, recognizing the nation's highest team grade point averages (GPA) for the 2002-03 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches. The Sacred Heart women's basketball team made the top-25 for the third straight season with a team grade point average of 3.278.
The Pioneers rank 19th and are among four teams from the Northeast Conference in this year's poll. Robert Morris ranked seventh, Quinnipiac 13th and St. Francis (PA) was 23rd. This year's 3.278 cumulative grade point average is the highest Sacred Heart has achieved in its three year's in the poll. The 2000-01 team was ranked 15th while the 2001-02 squad was 21st.
"This is a tribute to the student athletes we have in our women's basketball program," commented head coach Ed Swanson. "Our players continue to show that they have what it takes to be successful both on the court and in the classroom."
Senior Ashley Kohl (Palmyra, PA) returns to captain this year's team and will be a leader both on and off the court. Kohl was a 2003 Verizon Academic All-American last year when she was chosen to the University Division second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She held a 3.98 grade point average, the highest on the team, with a major in Psychology. The team was 12-5 in games that Kohl started, with the senior averaging 9.1 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per-game. On the season, she finished with a 6.7 per-game average, handing out 2.5 assists per game and shooting 35.3% (47-133) from behind the three-point line. Kohl's best performance in 2002-03 came in record fashion, when she buried a school record eight treys against Robert Morris to tie the mark for three-point makes in a game.
