Orono, ME - The trio of Brigitte Laflamme, Sonia Corriveau, and Vanessa Vani combined for three goals and six assists en route to the University of Maine's 8-1 win over Sacred Heart University on Saturday at Alfond Arena. Besides the play from the first line, senior co-captain Cheryl White tallied two goals.
Within the first minute of play the Pioneers were given an inkling of what to expect as Maine took a 1-0 lead 42 seconds into the game when White was in front of net and manuevered around Pioneer netminder Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) to take the early lead on an unassisted goal.
Maine's offensive brilliance continued when the Black Bears took a 2-0 lead. The goal came as Corriveau blazed through the middle of the Pioneer defense leaving the puck for Vani. Vani found LaFlamme who from outside the face-off circle ripped a shot to increase the lead by two. A little more than four minutes later with Maine on the power play, LaFlamme was able to set up a goal instead scoring one. As the Black Bears were in the Pioneer zone, the junior forward found Danielle Tangredi who increased Maine's lead to 3-0.
Although the periods may have changed, the result was still the same as Maine used offensive tactics to cut down any chances the Pioneers had of making a comeback. Similar to the opening frame, it was White who set the tone as she beat Boulay for a 4-0 lead more than three minutes into the period. Sophomore forward Sheri Wauters was credited with the assist on White's goal.
Seven minutes later, Maine increased the lead to 5-0 as LaFlamme and Vani engineered another goal by finding Corriveau who beat Boulay for a 5-0 lead. With less than a minute left in the period, Kim MacElhaney tallied her first goal of the season as her breakaway goal gave the Black Bears a 6-0 lead. Tangredi and junior forward Karine Senecal played a littletic-tac-toe with the Pioneer defenders before releasing MacElhaney from just inside the blue line.
Although the third period saw Sacred Heart end the shutout bid by Rachel Gettings, Maine still added two more goals from Vani and Senecal to end the game at 8-1. For Gettings, it was her first start of the season as she stopped five shots in the win.
Maine finished with a 43 to 6 shot advantage and went 2-6 on the power play. The Pioneers lone goal came while up a man advantage to finish 1for 6. Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) scored the power play goal with Rachel Mroz (Southington, CT) and Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ) garnering the assists. Boulay stopped 23 of 29 shots in two periods of play, with sophomore Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) saving 12 of 14 shots in the final stanza.
The Pioneers (0-4-1) continue their road trip with two games at Union next weekend.
