Moon Township, PA - The Robert Morris University women's hockey team scored three power play goals en route to a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart at the RMU Island Sports Center on Friday night. The win was the Colonials second straight, the first time the team has put together back-to-back wins as they run their season mark to 4-19-2. Sacred Heart falls to 9-14-3 with the loss.
Freshman forward Kristin Miles scored two goals to lead Robert Morris. The multi-goal game was the first this season for Miles who has four goals in the last three games.
Defensive partners Samantha Ullrich and Laura White, both freshman, shared in team history becoming the first RMU players to record multiple assists in a game. Both finished the night with two helpers.
Robert Morris fell behind late in the first period when sophomore Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA) scored her sixth goal of the season at 18:16. Hickman's attempted centering pass from behind the net deflected off a Colonial defender and found the short side on Robert Morris goaltender Brianne McLaughlin. It would be the only goal McLaughlin would surrender.
McLaughlin finished the game with 27 saves, to earn her fourth win of the year, improving to 4-18-2.
The Colonials came back via the power play in the second and third period. Freshman Kathryn Traynor tied the game 11:37 into the third period on the team's second power play of the game. White and Ullrich earned the assists on the goal.
The game went into the second intermission, 1-1, but again power play opportunities paid off for the Colonials. They scored on their next two chances, both off the stick of Miles. Ullrich picked the assist on Miles' first goal at 2:27. White and Traynor were credited with the helpers on the next goal at 6:55.
Robert Morris finished the game 3-6 with the man advantage while Sacred Heart failed to scored on seven chances in the game.
Junior Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) made 30 saves for the Pioneers as Robert Morris held the shot advantage, 33-28, for just the second time this season.
These two teams meet again on Saturday, February 18, in a 2:05 p.m. game at the RMU Island Sports Center.
