
Pioneer Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Rhode Island

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 23, 2006) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers and Rhode Island Ram women's tennis teams split their six singles matches Thursday afternoon but it was URI that captured the doubles point to post a 4-3 win at the SHU Tennis Courts. The loss evens the Pioneers record at 4-4 in dual match play while the Rams are a perfect 7-0.
Rhode Island earned the doubles point on the strength of their wins at #1 and #2. Erin Fleming and Grace Hedstrom posted an 8-5 win over SHU's #1 team of Lauren Galatie and Pam Pillo. URI's Valerie Chacon and Jess Sims posted an 8-2 win over Laurent Murillo and Nicole Betz at #2 to clinch the point. SHU did pick up a win at the #3 doubles spot with Jessica Schnell and Mandy Finkelstein winning 8-5 over Emily Conant and Caroline Reuschel.
The Pioneers got singles wins from Schnell at #4, 6-2 and 6-3 over Sims, and Betz at #5, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 over Haley Loewenthal. Pillo was awarded the win at #2 singles when Fleming was forced to retire after trailing 3-1 in the first set.
The tightest match of the afternoon pitted SHU's Lissa Von Brecht and Conant at #6 singles. Conant won a hard fought 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) decision.
SHU will be back in action on Friday at the University of Hartford at 1:30 pm.
