
Pioneers Tennis Post Strong Weekend on the Courts

Gonzales, Garbacz reach Metro Masters quarterfinals as McGuire earns four wins at Army Invitational
At the Metro Masters, sophomore transfer Amelie Gonzales and sophomore Tomasz Garbacz each advanced to the quarterfinals of singles play.
Gonzales opened her tournament with a hard-fought victory over Niagara's Maria Melo on Friday, earning a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 win in the Round of 16. She advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals, where she fell to eventual champion Willow Renton, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Garbacz also picked up a Round of 16 victory, defeating No. 6 seed Alexi Roy of Mount St. Mary's, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. He advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Quinnipiac's Vishal Prakash, 6-0, 6-3.
At the Army Invitational, freshman Zachary McGuire turned in a standout weekend, going 2-0 in singles while also collecting two victories in doubles play. McGuire defeated FDU's Asaf Schwartz, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4, on Saturday before earning a straight-set victory over Holy Cross' Colton Parker, 6-4, 6-2, on Sunday.
Junior Connor Liona also posted multiple victories, earning one singles win and two doubles wins, while sophomore Ferdinand Witting added two doubles victories over the weekend.
The Pioneers return to action this week at the New England ITA Regional Championships, beginning Thursday. The women's team will compete at Yale, while the men's team heads to Harvard.
