Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) scored two goals and senior Colleen Carney (Yorktown, Heights, NY) added a goal and an assist as Sacred Heart beat UMBC, 5-2, in field hockey action Sunday at Campus Field.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first 12:50 of the game. Carney put SHU on the board with a penalty corner conversion 5:40 into the game. Junior Jenn Howley (North Salem, NY) fired the ball in from the corner, Leah Stoeher (Hummelstown, PA) stopped it, and Carney whacked a shot into the net for her third tally of the season.
Senior Becky Ford (Salem, NH) scored the Pioneers second goal 11:38 into the match. Ford corralled a long downfield pass at the top of the circle, dribbled in, faked past Retriever goaltender Kat Tag and put the ball in a wide open cage for her second goal of the season.
Just 1:18 after Ford's goal, Eye put the Pioneers up 3-0 when she parked herself in front of the goal and deflected a shot by junior Katie Bohren (Hopwell Junction, NY) into the back of the net. The goal would turn out to be the game winner.
The Pioneers dominated the first half offensively, out shooting UMBC 9-0, to take a 3-0 lead into the break. However, the Retrievers came out hungry in the second half and were able to get back into the game.
Danielle Guldner put UMBC on the board 3:55 into the second stanza when she put a rebound shot past Pioneer goaltender Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA). Julie Moore made it 3-2 nine minutes later when she converted on a penalty stroke opportunity, firing a shot into the corner of the net. However, the Retrievers could not come back any further.
Freshman Brittany Rosselle (Pawling, NY) scored her first career goal tat the 49:41 mark of the second half to make it 4-2 Pioneers. After Carney let a shot go from the top of the circle, Rosselle was in front to tip the ball into the net.
Eye recorded her second goal of the game, with 7:55 left in the contest. After a scramble in front of the UMBC goal yielded several shots, Eye swooped in from the corner to clean-up the rebound and tally her 10th goal of the season. She has now equaled her total for the 2005 season when she led the Pioneers in scoring.
Sacred Heart out shot UMBC 21-13 for the game. The duo of Tag and Ashley Benitez combined to stop six shots for the Retrievers. After Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH) was not forced to make any saves in the first half, Mills stopped nine shots in the second to preserve the victory.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday when they host Brown. Game time at Campus Field is 4:00 pm.
