Sophomore Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) scored three goals and senior Colleen Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) added a goal and two assists as Sacred Heart turned aside Vermont, 6-2, in field hockey action Saturday at Campus Field.
Eye got the Pioneers off to a fast start with a tally just over five minutes into the game. Junior Katie Bohren (Hopewell Junction, NY) fired a shot from the top of the arc and Eye deflected it past Catamounts goaltender Erin Hickey for her third goal of the year.
Danielle Collins tied the game for Vermont at the 23:52 mark of the first half. Maegan Luce took a shot and Collins was in front to tip it past Pioneer goalie Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH).
Eye and Carney hooked up twice in a 1:14 second span late in the first half to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead at halftime. Collins answered for Vermont 26 seconds into the second half to cut the margin to 3-2. With her hat trick, Eye now has five goals on the season.
The Pioneers score three unanswered goals in the second half to put the game away. Carney scored her goal on a penalty corner which was set up by juniors Leah Stoehr (Hummelstown, PA) and Danielle Vasely (Hopewell Junction, NY). Stoehr would score at the 57:27 mark to make it 5-2 SHU.
Bohren finished the scoring with seven minutes remaining when she scored her first goal of the season. Vermont had a chance to make the game closer but Kim Striegler missed a penalty shot, firing the ball wide of the cage.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday when they face Virginia Commonwealth at Yale. Game time at Johnson Field is noon.
