Fairfield, CT - Junior Melissa Mazin (Putnam Valley, NY) had a goal and an assist and senior Danielle Vasely (Hopwell Junction, NY) added a goal on Senior Day to lead the Sacred Heart field hockey team to a 3-1 win over New Hampshire Sunday at Campus Field. The Pioneers close the regular season having won six of their last seven games.
Vasely got the Pioneers started 22:02 into the game. Mazin brought the ball down the left side of the field and fed a centering pass from the corner into the middle of the circle where Vasely hammered it past Wildcat goaltender Margaux Shute.
Mazin teamed up with senior Katie Bohren (Hopwell Junction, NY) to give SHU a 2-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first half. Bohren whacked the ball from the top of the circle towards the goal and Mazin was in front to deflect it into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
Junior Amy Hendricks made it 3-0 Pioneers just over 11 minutes into the second half when she scored off a rebound shot by senior Leah Stoehr (Hummelstown, PA). Meagan Shea put New Hampshire on the board 35 seconds later but it was too little too late for the Wildcats. Junior Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) made seven saves in the second half to preserve the Pioneers' victory.
Sacred Heart will be the third seed in the Northeast Conference playoffs hosted by Lock Haven next weekend. SHU will face Rider in the second semifinal game Friday at 1:30 pm.
