Pompeo and Sparks scored SHU's goals in a 3-2 loss
Records:
Sacred Heart: 5-8
UMass Lowell: 7-6
Leaders:
Joey Pompeo: 1 goal
Blaire Sparks: 1 goal
Brianna Cooper: 3 saves
Ruby Butler: 2 saves
How it Happened:
Sacred Heart built a 1-0 lead near the end of the first quarter, as Joey Pompeo opened the game's scoring at the 12:45 mark. On a penalty corner, Blaire Sparks started the play with a behind-the-back pass to Bell Mazza who fired a shot that was tipped across the line by Pompeo for her second goal of the season.Â
UMass Lowell scored the lone goal of the second period, as the game went into halftime tied at 1-1.Â
Coming out of the break, SHU needed just three minutes to retake the lead, 2-1. At 33:00, Sparks fired a Hailey Vogt pass into the back of the cage from the middle of the arc on another stellar penalty corner play.Â
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Riverhawks scored at 37:25 to tie the score at 2-2.
With the game still tied late into the fourth quarter, it seemed likely that the next goal would seal the victory. It was the Riverhawks the scored the decisive goal, taking a 3-2 win.Â
In the cage, both Brianna Cooper and Ruby Butler played a half for the Pios.Â
Noteworthy:
- Both Pompeo and Sparks scored their second goals of the season.Â
- Vogt's assist is her fifth point (2G, 2A) of the year.Â
- Mazza was credited with her first assist this season.Â
