
Women's Hockey Cruises Past Rhode Island on Senior Day, 10-2

Bridgeport, CT - Seniors Devon Gaslin (Augusta, ME) and Katelin McLaughlin (Hingham, MA) each had a goal and an assist and freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) added two goals and an assist as Sacred Heart cruised to a 10-2 win over Rhode Island on Senior Day at the Wonderland of Ice Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers controlled the play from the start as Fontaine scored two unassisted first period goals to get SHU rolling. The first got things started 2:58 into the game and the second tally came with 4:04 left in the opening stanza.
Freshman Taryn Lapierre (Burrillville, RI) made it 3-0 with 51 seconds left in the first period off a pass from Gaslin. The Pioneers took that momentum into the locker room and expanded it almost immediatley in the second period as freshman Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) converted a feed from McLaughlin just 43 seconds into the period.
Chelsea Skorupski got Rhode Island on the board at the 1:29 mark of the second period. However, the Pioneers answered right back as junior Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA) finished a scoring rush at the 5:42 mark. McLaughlin then netted a power play tally at the 9:08 mark and Gaslin scored followed with an unassisted goal with 1:54 left in the period. Freshman Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) slammed home a loose puck in front of the Rhode Island net as time expired in the second period to give SHU an 8-1 lead after two periods.
The Pioneers scored two more goals in the third period. At th 8:15 mark, junior Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) took a headlong pass from junior Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ), raced into the offensive zone and snapped a shot past Ram's goaltender Lynn Pecci. Less than a minute later, at the 9:06 mark, Feltz took a pass from freshman Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA) and blasted a shot from the blue-line that beat Pecci for SHU's tenth goal.
Skorupski netted her second goal of the game with 7:57 left to complete the scoring.
SHU dominated the game statistically, out-shooting the Rams 52-23. The Pioneers scored three goals in six power-play chances. Senior Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) made 21 saves in the final home start of her SHU career.
Sacred Heart will participate in the ECAC Open Tournament at Saint Anselm College in two weeks. The semifinals are set for Saturday March 1 with the championship round held on Sunday March 2.
