Final Stats
WORCESTER, MA (February
28, 2010) - Though the game was officially a 3-3 tie, the Sacred
Heart University women's ice hockey team came out on top 4-3 with a
win in a shootout over St. Michael's College in the ECAC Open
Championship consolation game, Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers concluded the
season 7-17-2, while the Purple Knights finished
3-20-2.
Junior Brittany
Hartman (Prior Lake, MN) broke through with the first goal of
the game 2:43 into the game for SHU. SMC came back with a pair of
power play goals to grab the lead before the close of the
frame. Junior Kelly
Rose Losi scored the first, followed by senior Desiree
Biron.
Sophomore Nicole
Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) notched a goal on the power play 6:39
into the second to tie the game at two. The Pioneers would take the lead
less than six minutes later as Hartman found the back of the net
for her 14th score of the season.
Purple Knights
senior captain Alexis Reagan tied the game at three with just over
six minutes to play in the second stanza.
After a scoreless
third period and overtime frame the two teams entered a
shootout. Sacred
Heart shot first and both teams were scoreless in their first two
tries. Senior Kate
Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) was the first to light the lamp for the
Pioneers. Biron
answered with a score for SMC, but Hartman came right back with a
score for SHU. With
the game on the line, freshman Allison Graf scored to keep the
Purple Knights alive.
In the seventh round of the shootout, Dunlop scored again to give
the Pioneers the win.
Sophomore Raelene
Sydor (St. Albert, AB) recorded 19 saves for the Pioneers. In between the pipes, for
the Purple Knights junior Alysia Goldman made 41 saves.
Sacred Heart
outshot Saint Michael's 44-22 for the game. The Pioneers converted only once
in ten power play opportunities, while the Purple Knights took full
advantage twice in six chances.
