Men's Hockey Moves To 2-2 After 7-1 Loss At #17 Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. –  The Sacred Heart men's hockey team moved to 2-2 on the season Saturday night after a 7-1 loss to the #17 Rensselaer Engineers at Houston Field House.

Rensselaer (3-1) got on the scoreboard 7:44 into the game. Ryan Haggerty had a shot stopped by Sacred Heart (2-2) goaltender Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.). Haggerty found the rebound and knocked the puck in to put the Engineers ahead 1-0. Rensselaer extended the lead to 2-0 with 6:33 left in the period when Matt Tinordi knocked home the rebound of a Brock Higgs shot. The lead grew to 3-0 with 1:44 remaining in the first. Jacob Laliberte won a faceoff to Haggerty who fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. The Engineers dominated the period, outshooting the Pioneers 13-3. Sacred Heart did kill both Rensselaer power plays in the opening period, holding the Engineers to three shots.

Sacred Heart came out firing to start the second period, scoring 3:24 into the frame. Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) scored on a breakaway with an assist from Drew George (Regina, Sask.) to make the score 3-1. The goal was Carroll's first of his career. Less than three minutes later, the Pioneers went on the power play. It was the Engineers, however, who had two chances to score during those two minutes with Vazzano making two saves. The Pioneers almost cut the deficit to one with 10:27 left in the period when Jake Lynes (Ellicott City, Md.) put a shot off the goalpost. Rensselaer extended the lead to 4-1 with 7:53 to play. Chris Bradley and Curtis Leonard started a breakout out of the Engineers' zone, finding Haggerty who finished off the rush with his third goal of the game.  The Engineers tacked on three more goals in the third period to make the final score 7-1.

Rensselaer outshot Sacred Heart 35-18, with the Pioneers outshooting the Engineers 8-7. Vazzano made 28 saves for the Pioneers while Engineers' goaltender Scott Diebold had 17. Sacred Heart was 0-for-3 on the power play while Rensselaer was 1-for-5. Carroll and George were among five Pioneers to have two shots in the game.

Sacred Heart continues its current road swing at AIC on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
