FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With one of the best weekend performances in recent history,
Felix Trudeau added two more goals to his tally to lead the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Canisius on Saturday for the team's second Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) sweep of the season.
Trudeau finished the weekend with five goals, climbing to the conference lead in both points (12) and goals (9).
Records:
SHU: 5-5-1, 4-3-1 AHA
Canisius: 5-6-1, 1-4-1 AHA
How It Happened:
The man of the hour, Trudeau, opened the scoring just 00:34 into tonight's game.
Stephane Huard started the play on a transition following a faceoff win. Huard skated to the left slot, stopped on a dime and found a trailing Trudeau, who put the puck into the top-right corner.
Trudeau netted his fifth goal of the weekend at 17:47 in the first to give the Pios a 2-0 advantage. Huard again sparked the offense, sending a pass to a streaking
Reid Pabich, whose backhand shot was saved but fell to Trudeau. Trudeau snuck the rebound behind a prone Chase Clark for the goal.
The lone score of the second period went to the Griffs, as SHU took a 2-1 advantage into the third period.
Sacred Heart rebuilt its two-goal advantage, 3-1, 2:52 into the final period on a goal from
Joshua Barnes. The senior scored his second goal after
Ray Fust swiped the puck in the neutral zone then fed Barnes for a tap-in goal from the left slot.
The game became interesting by the end with a flurry of penalties and Canisius trimming the margin to one, 3-2, with 2:22 remaining. However, the Pioneers showed their resilience, keeping the Golden Griffins at bay for the 3-2 win and three more AHA points.
Between the pipes,
Ajeet Gundarah made 26 saves for his fifth win of the season. After the weekend, the sophomore's goal against average dipped to 1.99 and his save percentage grew to .929.
