Pioneers Downed by Lafayette Free Throw with 0.4 Seconds Remaining, 82-81

EASTON, Penn. – With the game tied at 81-81 and time winding down, Lafayette's Dan Trist rebounded an air ball and got fouled on the put back attempt with 0.4 seconds remaining. After missing the first foul shot, Trist nailed the second to put the Leopards up 82-81. On the ensuing inbound, Steve Glowiak's half court effort missed off the rim, sealing the one-point victory. Despite 52.5 percent shooting and four players scoring in double figures, led by a double double from De'von Barnett, the Pioneers fall to 4-4 on the year. Trist led Lafayette with 20, as the Leopards improve to 6-2.
Trailing 77-67 with 4:29 to play, the Pioneers outscored the Leopards 14-4 over the next 4:02 to tie the game at 81 with twenty seven seconds remaining. Trailing by three points, Jordan Allen got fouled after making a layup and drained the ensuing foul shot to even the score. The run started with Barnett making two free throws. Cane Broome then scored five straight to cut the lead to 77-74 with 2:47 on the clock. After trading layups the next two possessions, Nick Lindner made a layup with 1:27 to stretch the lead back out to five at 81-76. Allen answered with a layup of his own eight seconds later to cut the deficit back to three.
Evan Kelley, Broome, and Allen all contributed double figures, with 14, 14, and 12, respectively. Barnett added a game-high 11 rebounds. For the Leopards, five players were in double figures, while the team made ten three-pointers and shot 47.2 percent from the field. Lindner dished out 12 assists.
The Leopards outscored the Pioneers 11-5 out of the half to take at the time, their largest lead of the game at 57-49 with 16:06 on the clock. SHU then scored seven straight to get back within one after a Broome jumper with 12:54 left.
Lafayette regained control with a 12-4 edge over the next 5:26 to stretch its lead to nine after a Seth Hinrichs jumper with 7:28 remaining in the game. The Pioneers cut the lead to five twice at the 6:37 and 5:50 mark, before the Leopards scored five straight to take their biggest advantage of the contest at 77-67.
SHU held a 46-28 advantage in the paint and a slight 34-32 edge on the boards. The Pioneers also made four more free throws than the Leopards, 14-10.
SHU scored the first six points of the game to go up 6-0 just 1:30 in. That began a 10-4 spurt in the first 3:19, led by Barnett, who scored six during the run.
After Lafayette cut the lead to one at 19-18 with 13:31 left before the break, Sacred Heart scored 14 unanswered to take their largest lead of the game. Broome began the flurry with a three-pointer, while a layup by Cole Walton made the score 33-18 with 10:58 remaining.
From there Lafayette would close the half outscoring the Pioneers 28-11, led by five 3-pointers, to take a 46-44 lead into the locker room. Seth Hinrichs capped an initial 7-0 run with a trifecta to cut the deficit to 8 at 33-25 with 8:08 on the clock.
The Pioneers would get it back to 11 with a jumper by Gaetano, and ten on a layup by Kelley to regain the double digit advantage. Kelley's basket put SHU up 39-29, 6:03 before the break. Lafayette would answer again with a 17-5 surge over the final 5:46 going into the break. The Leopards made four three-pointers during the run. Ptasinksi made the final two, including one with 33 seconds left.
The Leopards used 9-18 shooting from long range to take the lead into the half. They would make just one more trifecta the remainder of the contest.
