DeRienzo, Rydzewski Both Win In Women's Tennis 5-2 Loss To Albany

The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision to visiting University of Albany in Fairfield, Conn. this afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-9 overall, while the Great Danes improve to 8-9 on the season.
Katie DeRienzo and Nicole Rydzewksi were both winners in singles matches, extending their personal singles win streaks to three matches. DeRienzo captured the first singles, 6-4, 6-3, over Cheryl Kukkonen, while Rydzewski won at number-four singles, 6-4, 6-1, over Paulina Torres.
The Pioneers dropped the doubles points, despite DiRienzo and Rydzewski winning at number-two, 8-2. Lindsay Post and Paige Olson had a hard-fought match at number-one, falling 8-6. Taylor Gurda and Haley Dubits fell 8-2 in the third doubles match.
Post won the first set at number-two singles, before falling 3-6, 6-3 (10-1) to Mireille Hermans. Kirsten Scott defeated Olson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at number three singles, while Alba Sala gave Albany a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five singles, over Gurda. Cathryn Crummery earned the sixth-singles victory, 6-0, 7-6 (6) over SHU's Mariah Wardius.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, travelling to Quinnipiac for a 3 p.m. contest.
