Pioneers Fall 1-0 at Wesleyan Tuesday Night

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Amanda Fontaine stopped 34 of 35 shots, but it was the Wesleyan Cardinals that prevailed over the Sacred Heart women's hockey team 1-0 at Spurrier-Snyder Rink Tuesday night.
Wesleyan (5-6-0) outshot Sacred Heart (5-9-1) 14-2 in the first period but both Fontaine and Cardinals goaltender Corinne Rivard kept each shot out of their respective goals, leading to a scoreless period. After over a half-hour of scoreless hockey, the Cardinals broke through for the game's lone goal. Mackenzie McPike shot a Lottie Barton feed past Fontaine at 11:30 of the second period to make the score 1-0. After having two shots in the first period, the Pioneers had nine in the final two periods but couldn't score the game-tying goal.
The Cardinals outshot Sacred Heart 35-11 for the game. Neither team was successful on the power play, with the Pioneers going 0-for-1 and Wesleyan going 0-for-5.
Sacred Heart opens a weekend home-and-home series with Trinity on Friday, Jan. 16 at Trinity at 7:30 p.m.
