Stevenson Drives Past Sacred Heart 6-1

SHELTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team was tied with Stevenson 1-1 with 16:51 to play at Sports Center of Connecticut on Saturday, but the Mustangs scored the last five goals to win 6-1 and sweep the weekend series with the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart (5-13-1) and Stevenson (14-6-0) played a scoreless first period, with the Mustangs outshooting the Pioneers 13-6. Stevenson got on the scoreboard 7:49 into the second period, when Erin McLoughlin capped off a 2-on-1 rush by firing a Samantha Madej shot past Nicole Magee. Despite being outshot 25-11 through two periods, the Pioneers tied the game 1-1 3:09 into the third period. Woodford scored her 11th goal of the season off the rebound of a Taylor Moreland shot from right in front of the Stevenson goal. The Mustangs took back the lead 1:47 later on a goal by Megan Alexander. Stevenson pulled away late, scoring four goals in the last 4:26 to make the final score 6-1.
The Mustangs outshot the Pioneers 38-22. Sacred Heart was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Stevenson scored on one of two power plays. Magee made 32 saves for Sacred Heart as Anastassia Nelson stopped 21 shots for Stevenson.
The Pioneers open a five-game road trip Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Williams at 7 p.m.
