PHILADELPHIA - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team went 3-2 at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn, on Sunday. The Pioneers defeated North Carolina 20-7, Lafayette 24-3 and Johns Hopkins 14-13 while falling to Penn 21-6 and Duke 14-13.
The epee squad led the day with a 35-10 performance. Kevin Almerini went 12-3, Khris White 11-3 and Jon Jacovino 8-3. Cody Richard went 4-0 on Sunday, including two important wins over Johns Hopkins. Foil was 26-19 and was led by Andrew Holmes' 9-6 performance.
"I am pretty happy with our performance today," Head Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel said. "We were very close to pulling off a victory over a strong Duke squad and we did a nice job in the Johns Hopkins and North Carolina wins. We really pushed Penn but lost an incredible nine bouts by a score of 5-4."
"Fortunately we remained focused and determined after the Penn loss and came back very hard against North Carolina," added Vrabel. "I can't say enough about how the epee squad performed. I have been waiting for us to break out like this all season. We look to be in a good position as we get ready to finish the Northeast Fencing Conference season."
The Pioneers are currently tied with Brandeis for the conference lead with one loss and remain in contention to win their sixth consecutive NFC Championship.
Sacred Heart is back in action at Yale on Saturday, January 31. Action starts at 1 PM.
