FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team won its second consecutive match in impressive fashion on Sunday, sweeping Siena 5-0 at the Pioneer Tennis Courts in non-conference action. After taking all three doubles matches, SHU did not drop a set in its four singles victories.
Matt Dean and Anthony Savio each recorded both a doubles and singles win on the afternoon. Dean teamed with Brian Power for the duo's third consecutive victory, a 6-0 sweep at first doubles, while Savio paired with Derek Chapman for a 6-1 decision at second doubles. The Pioneers swept doubles play with a tight 7-6 triumph at third doubles by Matthew Suprenant and Anthony Santino.
Dean's and Savio's wins in singles came at second and third singles by comfortable scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively. Also winning singles matches were Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and Cory Seltman. Pilote was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at fifth singles, while Seltman's victory came at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Both Power and Karan Narula seemed well on their way to making it a 7-0 final for Sacred Heart, but both had their matches called due to the weather while they were ahead in the second set. Power was winning 6-2, 4-1, while Narula was on top 6-4, 2-1.
SHU returns to tournament play next weekend with the ITA Championships at Yale University. Play in the event begins on Friday before concluding on Saturday.
