Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart baseball lost 9-1 to Fordham on Friday afternoon in non-conference action. Alex Perry and Kenny Byram both reached base twice with a hit and walk each, while Bryam also added two stolen bases. The loss is the tenth straight for the Pioneers to begin 2015. Three Ram pitchers combined to allow zero earned runs, with starter B. Kennedy tossing six scoreless. M. Kozuch led the offensive attack going 3-4 with two RBI's, as Fordham outhit SHU 15-7 to bring its record to 4-10.
The opening runs of the game came in consecutive half innings and were unearned. It started in the bottom of the second with R. Mahoney starting off the frame with a single. After advancing to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt, he moved up to third by way of a passed ball. The next runner would walk setting up a RBI situation for J. Devito, which he converted with a groundout to shortstop. Devito was caught stealing to send the game to the third, where Cody Doyle got things going with a leadoff single. Following a wild pitch in which Doyle took second, the Pioneers tied it up as Byram's ground ball resulted in an error that allowed Doyle to score. Byram reached third with one out by stealing second and interference on the shortstop, but was stranded after consecutive strikeouts.
The Rams came right back in their half of the third to take the lead for good. Lundy led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jason Foley induced back to back groundouts to nearly get out of the inning unscathed, but Kozuch delivered the eventual game-winning RBI with his two out single.
After SHU failed to take advantage of scoring Jayson Sullivan, who had singled and stole second to lead off the fourth, Fordham cushioned its lead with two more in the bottom half. Successive doubles plated the first run before J. Lundy came through with a two out RBI single to bring the Ram lead to 4-1. Dan Wertz came in to relieve Foley following a walk and got out of the jam with no further damage.
Byram reached second in the fifth and Perry advanced to third in the six after singles, but Sacred Heart could not knock either of them in. The Rams put the game away for good in the bottom half of the seventh with three straight hits to begin the inning. C Galiano's three run homer over the left field fence extended the Fordham advantage to 7-1. The Rams added two more in the eighth.
Jesus Medina doubled to start the game but was left stranded. Wertz finished with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief after replacing Foley, who earned the loss after allowing three earned over 3.2 innings.
