Ellen Nighbor Places Third At NEC Championship; Pioneers Take Fourth Place

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Ellen Nighbor (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) carded a final round 74 on Sunday, finishing the 2015 Northeast Conference Championship at LPGA International in third place at +10. It is the highest finish for a Sacred Heart individual golfer at the NEC Championship in program history. As a team, the Pioneers placed fourth for the fourth straight year.
Nighbor bounced back from back-to-back bogeys on holes three and four to birdie the par-five fourth, scoring even par on the front nine. She then went two-over on the back, with another birdie, to post a score of +2 74. Her score was the second-lowest round on Sunday. Nighbor finished one stroke behind second-place Taylar Jaramillo or Saint Francis U and two strokes behind individual champion Gabriela Santini of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Freshman Abigail Hood (Gloucester, Mass.) finished the tournament tied for 10th place at +20. Hood had a final round 78, cutting five strokes from her round on Saturday. Senior Kelsey Hayward (Seekonk, Mass.) had a round of 81 Sunday, putting herself in 16th place at +26. Alejandra Perez (Zaragoza, Spain) had her best round of the tournament Sunday. Perez had a +6 78 in the final round, an improvement of five strokes from Saturday and eight from Friday. She finished the tournament in a tie for 18th at +31.
The Pioneers had their best team round of the tournament Sunday, posting a team score of +23. Sacred Heart passed Saint Francis U in the final round for fourth place, finishing eight strokes ahead of the Red Flash with a final team score of +87. The Pioneers were three strokes behind third place Wagner. Fairleigh Dickinson won the tournament at +75, three strokes ahead of LIU Brooklyn.
