Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Bouncing back from a season-opening defeat on Friday night, the Sacred Heart women's soccer team defeated Stony Brook 2-0 on Sunday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Freshman Melanie DaSilva (Bristol, R.I.) scored her second goal in as many games Sunday, putting Sacred Heart (1-1-0) ahead after 11 minutes. DaSilva slid into the six-yard box to put in a cross from Lindsay Corallo (Jackson, N.J.), giving Corallo her first career assist as a Pioneer. Senior Alexis Parlato (Center Moriches, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers the brace they needed in the second half. After Corallo hit the crossbar in the 51st minute, Parlato knocked in the rebound to give SHU a 2-0 lead. Goalkeeper Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.) made eight saves for her first clean sheet of the season.
The Pioneers host Saint Joseph's on Sunday, August 30 at 1 p.m. at Campus Field for their home opener.
FIRST HALF
- Sacred Heart goalkeeper Talia Schwartz made her first save of the day in the sixth minute, corralling a header from Stony Brook's Julie Johnstonbaugh
- The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Melanie DaSilva hit a sliding one-touch off of a Lindsay Corallo cross. Corallo's assist marked her first collegiate point. DaSilva also hit the crossbar one minute later.
- Schwartz stopped a Lindsay Hutchinson shot in the 14th minute and a Tessa Devereaux attempt at goal in the 16th minute to preserve SHU's 1-0 lead
- SHU was outshot 10-4 by Stony Brook in the first half, with Schwartz making five saves
SECOND HALF
- Sacred Heart went up 2-0 in the 51st minute. Corallo put a shot off the goalframe. Parlato's initial rebound was saved by Stony Brook goalkeeper Emily Doherty, but the senior scored on the second opportunity.
- Stony Brook's Emily Murrer hit the crossbar in the 57th minute
- Parlato had a chance for a second goal in the 70th minute, but Doherty made the save on her long-distance shot
