Late Touchdown Pushes Marist Past Sacred Heart 34-27

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart football team suffered its first defeat of the 2015 season Saturday night, falling 34-27 to the Marist Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.

With the game tied 27-27 with 3:33 remaining in the fourth quarter, Marist (1-2) running back Marcellus Calhoun broke off a 69-yard touchdown run to give the Red Foxes a 34-27 lead. RJ Noel's hail mary pass on fourth-and-23 from the SHU 44 went off the hands of Moses Webb in the final minute to secure the victory for the Red Foxes.

Sacred Heart moves to 2-1 with the loss. Noel was 14-of-28 passing for a season-high 277 yards and four touchdowns. Tyler Dube had seven receptions for 138 yards and three touchdowns, tying a career-high. Ose Imeokparia ran the ball 20 times for 78 yards.  Kellen Sperduto led the Pioneers with eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Dylan Ackerson also had 1.5 sacks as SHU recorded six sacks.

Marist quarterback Mike White was 15-for-36 passing, 342 yards, and a touchdown. Marcellus Calhoun and 117 yards rushing with a touchdown and also caught a touchdown.

The Pioneers travel to Dartmouth next Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

FIRST QUARTER

3:34 to play – Marist 7, SHU 0; The Red Foxes went on an eight-play, 70 yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mike White.

SECOND QUARTER

10:58 to play – Marist 14, SHU 0; White connected with Calhoun on a 75-yard touchdown pass.

10:12 to play – Marist 14, SHU 7; After taking a sack on the first play of the drive, Noel found Dube for an 80-yard touchdown. 

4:57 to play – Marist 21, SHU 7; The Red Foxes forced a Pioneer fumble on the previous drive. Calhoun scored on a 1-yd TD run. Marist converted a 3rd and 22 with a 45-yard pitch and catch from White to Justin Christian. 

THIRD QUARTER

10:27 to play – Marist 24, SHU 7; Mike Maccarone makes a 36-yard field goal to put the Red Foxes ahead by 17. 

4:12 to play – Marist 24, SHU 13; Noel to Dube for a seven-yard touchdown, but the point after was blocked. Jackson King had a 44-yd reception on a third and 10 to get SHU into the red zone.

Marist fumble w/4:06 left; 1:07 to play – Noel and Dube connected for their third touchdown of the game. Noel then rushes in the two-point conversion

FOURTH QUARTER 

11:44 to play – Marist 27, SHU 21; A SHU sack on third and goal leads to a 30-yard Maccarone field goal.

6:59 to play – Noel throws interception after Chris Hutton picked off White on the previous possession.

4:56 to play  – Marist 27, SHU 27; Andrew O'Neill went 55 yards on a screen pass for his first career touchdown. A penalty forced a 35-yard PAT that was blocked.

3:33 to play – Marist 34, SHU 27; Calhoun score on a 69-yard touchdown run three plays after the Pioneers tied the game. 

NOTES

- Tyler Dube caught a pass in his 32nd consecutive game. His 80-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter was the longest of his career. In two games against Marist, Dube has 17 catches for 263 yards and five touchdowns.

- RJ Noel threw his 50th career touchdown pass in the first quarter to Dube. It was Dube's 30th career touchdown reception.

- Chris Hutton's interception in the fourth quarter was his first as a Pioneer. It was Sacred Heart's 12th straight game with an interception on defense.
