EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Matt Dean and Cory Seltman opened the spring season with victories as the Sacred Heart men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Boston University in its spring opener in East Hartford on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers, who went 2-1 in the fall, move to an even 2-2 on the year.
Seltman is now 6-3 this season, one win shy of Derek Chapman's team-best seven wins, as he took two close sets, 7-5, 6-4, at sixth singles. Dean's win came at second singles and was also in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. He moves to 2-1 in dual matches as the Pioneers' primary second singles player.
All three doubles matches were decided by two games or less with BU narrowly prevailing in all three. Dean and Brian Power were closest to a SHU victory, dropping a tiebreaker at first doubles.
Sacred Heart begins Northeast Conference play next Sunday, hosting St. Francis Brooklyn at Yale for a 3 pm start.
