POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team sent ten fencers to the NCAA Regional Qualifier at Vassar on Sunday. The team was led on the day freshman epeeist Romain Cannone who placed second in the event.
On the day he was 17-6, including an impressive 8-3 result in the final round. His notable victories included three wins over the 2015 NCAA champion Jake Hoyle from Columbia, a win over 2014 NCAA Champion Yevgeniy Karyuchenko from St. John's, and two wins over 2015 first team All-American Brian Ro from Columbia.
Other notable performances on the day included sophomore foilist Tyler Endee placing 13th. Cannone is an automatic qualifier from the Northeast region based on his result from Sunday and his performance over the season in dual matches. Endee has an excellent chance of receiving an at large bid to the NCAA Championships. The full field will be announced by the NCAA committee on Tuesday.
"I am very pleased with Romain Cannone's performance on Sunday", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Romain has had exceptional success in world cup events and has been a junior national team member for France, but it has taken him a while to adjust to NCAA fencing with its exclusively five-touch bout format. He had a super freshman year but this was the first time that he has been able to fence up to the level that he has shown so many times on the international stage. Romain has now established himself as a legitimate contender for first team All American honors next week. Tyler Endee also had a great result and he just missed making the final 12 man pool. Hopefully he will be joining Romain and Julia Greene at the championship as an at-large selection. We will know about this Tuesday."
The NCAA will announce on Tuesday the all qualifiers for the 2016 Fencing Championship which will be held on March 24-27th at Brandeis University.
