Sacred Heart Comes up Just Short in Loss to Valpo

HUMACAO, P.R. – Looking to win its third match in a row, the Sacred Heart women's tennis team had four match points at second doubles to clinch a victory, but could not overcome Valparaiso in its first action during its Spring Break trip in Puerto Rico on Sunday morning. The Pioneers are now 3-5 on the season.
Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Month Katie DeRienzo extended her winning streak across both singles and doubles play to six matches, sweeping her opponent at first singles, 6-3, 7-6, and teaming with Taylor Gurda for a 6-3 victory at first doubles.
NEC Rookie of the Month Olivia Podsibeirski also swept her match at third singles, 7-5, 6-2, for her third straight win. Paige Olson gave SHU its third point by defeating her second singles opponent 7-5, 6-2.
Gurda and Lindsey Post both lost the first set of their matches before forcing super tiebreaker third sets, where a win would give Sacred Heart a fourth point and therefore a victory. The two would fall short though, with Post falling by a score of 10-7 at fourth singles and Ruiz 10-5 at fifth singles.
The teams moved onto doubles play where a win at either second or third doubles could still extend SHU's winning streak after DeRienzo's and Gurda's victory. Olson and Podsiebierski had those four match points before eventually dropping the tiebreaker 8-6.
The Pioneers will look to rebound in its second of three matches in Puerto Rico tomorrow when they take on East Carolina.
