Overtime Penalty Stroke Difference In 3-2 Loss To Georgetown

The Sacred Heart University field hockey team fell 3-2 to Georgetown University in overtime Sunday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.  The loss in the non-conference finale drops the Pioneers to 6-11 on the year, while the Hoyas improve to 8-9 on the year.

The Hoyas scored with 9:45 to play in regulation, tying the game 2-2 and forcing the extra period. SHU had a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the extra period but could not convert.  The Hoyas earned a penalty stroke moments later and Anna Farley converted to the near post for the game-winning tally.

SHU returns to action on Friday night when it hosts LIU Brooklyn in MAAC action on Johnson Field.  That match, which will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies, is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

The Scoring

  • Colleen McAninley opened the scoring at 26:19 as Nichole Tolli sent a long pass to her for the 1-0 lead
  • Megan Parsons converted a penalty stroke after time had expired at the end of the first-half to send the score to intermission knotted 1-1
  • SHU retook the lead early in the second-half as Lauren Lawson fed a ball along the end line to Makenna Crawford, who netted the ball to give SHU the advantage, 2-1
  • Jax van der Veen tied the score for Georgetown with a shot from the top of the circle at the 60:15 mark
  • Farley scored the game winner on the penalty stroke at 76:29

Noteworthy

  • Both teams recorded two shots in the overtime period, with Georgetown holding a 21-10 advantage in the game
  • Hailey Power took the loss in goal, playing the first-half and overtime, and finished with six saves against two goals - both penalty strokes
  • Emily Degennaro made four saves in ther 35:00 of action in the second-half for SHU
  • Chloe Verwiel finished with three saves for the Hoyas in earning the win
  • The Hoyas held a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners
