STORRS, Conn.— The Sacred Heart baseball team dropped a midweek matchup against Nutmeg state counterpart UConn, 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. The Huskies (26-20) held the Pioneers (16-30) scoreless over the last six innings to take the non-conference contest.
The Pioneers were able to put the first run on the board in the top of the third inning as junior Anthony Capozziello opened the inning with a walk. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout by senior Keith Klebart. SHU's leading RBI producer, redshirt junior PJ DeFilippo stepped up to the plate and lined a single to center field to score Capozziello. UConn tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning as Willy Yahn lifted the sacrifice fly to center field to score John Toppa.
The Huskies would take the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Toppa hit a two RBI single to center field off junior Ethan Lonardelli. SHU threatened in the top of the eighth inning as Capozziello opened the inning with a single to second base. Klebart followed that up with his single to third and DeFilippo laid down the bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Reliever PJ Poulin picked up a huge double play, getting the lead runner in Capozziello at home and freshman Austin Markmann at first base. He finished the inning with a groundout to senior Jake Friar to leave two runners left on base. UConn got the dagger in the form of Isaac Feldstein's two run homer to left field of graduate Franklin Miller.
DeFilippo and Klebart led the Pioneer offense with two hits each. DeFilippo has recorded fourteen multi-hit games this season. It was a staff day on the bump for the Pioneers. Senior John Sostarich pitched a scoreless frame in the start. Both Sostarich and Aldam did not allow a hit. Sophomore Jackson Aldam followed up with a scoreless inning of his own. Redshirt sophomore Nick Rubino pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
The Pioneers welcome Bryant for a four-game series in the final home stand at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The series opens Thursday with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
