Pioneers Drop Final Non-Conference Tilt at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – The Sacred Heart football team struggled in its final non-conference matchup up of the season on Saturday evening, amassing just 171 yards of total offense in a 42-0 defeat at Dartmouth. The Big Green (5-0) totaled 531 yards of offense in a balanced attack that gained 277 yards on the ground and 12 different players total at least one yard of rushing.

Sacred Heart (3-3) was held to season-lows of 64 yards rushing and 107 passing yards by a strong Dartmouth defense that entered the game allowing just 248 yards of offense and 11.5 points per game this season.

Junior Mike Wilen led the defense with a game-high nine tackles, including one sack. First-year DeAndre Byrd made his collegiate debut by making five tackles, and four other Pioneers each recorded four tackles apiece.

On offense, junior Grant Lowary made his SHU debut at quarterback going 17-for-32 for 104 yards. First-year Julius Chestnut led the rushing attack with 48 yards on the ground and 11 different receivers had a reception, led by sophomore Nathan Balthazard with four catches for 20 yards.

 FIRST QUARTER

  • After a SHU three-and-out, Dartmouth needed just four plays to get in the end zone, going 61 yards in 1:38, ending with a 27-yard pass from Jared Gerbino to Robbie Mangas for his first-career touchdown.
  • Dartmouth scored for the second straight drive, going 64 yards on six plays in just 1:58, ending with a one-yard scamper by Gerbino through a hole on the left side, making it 14-0 at the 7:25 mark.
  • After a three and out, Dartmouth converted a 31-yard pass to move the ball to the SHU 21. The drive culminated with another one-yard Gerbino scoring run, making it 21-0 with 2:08 on the clock.
  • Eight of Dartmouth's first 11 plays went for at least eight yards.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Dartmouth converted a pair of fourth downs on their next drive, running a fake punt on the 4th-and-1 situation from near midfield for a 24-yard run off a direct snap, then another on 4th-and-1 from the 19.
  • One play after the second conversion, Derek Kyler found Hunter Hagdorn for a 17-yard touchdown in the back right corner, making it 28-0 with 9:41 left until halftime.
  • The Big Green went up 35-0 with 3:25 left in the opening half when Gerbino hit Connor Rempel for five-yard completion to his right.

 

  • SHU mustered just 72 yards of total offense in the first half, compared to 340 for Dartmouth. Dartmouth had 17 first downs to SHU's six in the opening 30 minutes.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Dartmouth took the second half kickoff and went right down the field, keeping the momentum going with a touchdown on an 11-yard run by Rashaad Cooper, capping a six-play, 59-yard drive in under three minutes to go up 42-0
  • SHU picked up two first downs on its next drive, moving the ball across midfield before punting. After forcing Dartmouth to punt. Lowary found Del Driscoll for his first-career catch on a seven-yard completion to the SHU 27. SHU would pick up a first down on the series before being forced to punt.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Dartmouth's drive took them to the SHU 31, before attempting a 48-yard field goal on the opening play, but the line drive kick sailed wide left.
  • SHU embarked on its longest drive of the game, a 55-yard drive that took them into the red zone for the first time to the Dartmouth 14-yard line. Lowary hit Nunez for 11 yards and a first down to the Dartmouth 34, and Chestnut converted a 12-yard run on 4th-and-2 to set up a first down at the 14. SHU faced another 4th-and-10 on its next sequence, but Lowary's pass for Charles Mack was broken up resulting in a turnover on downs.

Next up, the Pioneers will re-enter Northeast Conference play for their final five games of the season beginning next week with a trip to in-state rival Central Connecticut. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Arute Field in New Britain.

EXTRA POINTS

  • SHU drove inside the Dartmouth 35-yard line on two occasions during the game, including only one trip into the red zone in the fourth quarter.
  • This is the first time SHU has been shut out since a 24-0 loss at Monmouth in 2006.
  • Sacred Heart was held under 300 yards of total offense, 130 yards passing and 170 yards rushing for the first time all season.
  • Sacred Heart has now allowed at least 35 points in the first half in two of its last three games, but has not allowed a fourth quarter score in either game.
  • SHU has gone three games without an interception for the first time since a four-game stretch in 2009.
  • Dartmouth is one of four unbeaten remaining teams in FCS, and the only one that is not ranked in either the FCS Coaches' of FCS STATS poll.
  • Dartmouth's streak of scoring points in 20 straight quarters ended with a scoreless fourth quarter, a school record that dates back to at least the 1960s. It was the first time they had scored in 19 straight quarters since 1992.
  • Dartmouth has a touchdown pass in 16 straight games, tying a school record.
