Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph's, 71-44

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Easy looks on offense came in small doses for the Sacred Heart women's basketball team on Wednesday night as the Pioneers shot just 25.6 percent in a 71-44 loss at Saint Joseph's. A fourth straight road loss moves SHU to 3-5 on the season while SJU vaults back up to .500 with a 4-4 record.

Four Pioneers – Adrianne Hagood (13), Nikki Johnson (9), Jayla Davis (9) and Olivia Dabney (9) – combined for 40 of the team's total 44 points scored on the evening. For Hagood, this is the third straight game in which she leads SHU in scoring while Davis went 9-for-12 at the free throw line to set new career-bests in both free throw makes and attempts.

As a team, SHU went to the free throw line 30 times in the game as the Pioneers went 17-for-30, scoring nearly half their points from the charity stripe. Davis led the way with her nine makes on 12 attempts.

1st Quarter (17-9 SJU)

  • Even with the lopsided margin, SHU got off to a good start, scoring the first two points of the game and later owning a 6-4 advantage 3:03 into the period
  • The margin stayed within range at 10-9 in favor of SJU with 3:35 remaining but SHU went without a field goal for the final 4:39 of the frame which allowed the Hawks to take a 9-1 run into the end of the quarter, giving them an eight-point lead after one

2nd Quarter (37-18 SJU)

  • Johnson broke the extended scoreless streak with a layup to open the second quarter while Hagood splashed in a triple to cut the SJU lead down to 19-14
  • The five-point deficit, however, would be the closest the Pioneers came to the lead for the remainder of play as a convincing 18-4 Hawk run closed the first half

3rd Quarter (55-32 SJU)

  • The highest-scoring quarter of the game for SHU came in the third as SHU scored nine of their 14 points from the free throw line
  • SJU's defense continued to clamp down on SHU as the Pioneers shot just 2-for-13 (15.4 percent) in the quarter while the Hawks' rapid pace allowed for SJU to put up 20 shot attempts in the third period alone

4th Quarter (71-44 SJU)

  • Hagood and Johnson combined for some quality looks in the fourth as the pairing either scored or assisted on all four field goals of the frame for SHU
  • On the other end, SHU stepped up defensively in holding SJU to just 35.7 percent shooting while the Pioneers went 4-for-10 from the floor and 3-of-7 from three-point territory

NOTES

  • SJU continues to dominate the all-time series with the Pioneers, moving to 4-0 all-time against SHU
  • The 25.6 percent shooting is the first sub-30 percent showing for the Pioneers of the season
  • SHU went to the free throw line a season-high 30 times in the contest
  • After coming off the bench in her first five games played this season, Davis was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in 2019-20
  • Dabney added one more block to her NEC-leading total of 14 on the season
