Women's Ice Hockey Blanks Franklin Pierce 3-0 For Eighth Straight Win

SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team picked up its eighth straight of the win this afternoon as the Pioneers shutout Franklin Pierce by a final score of 3-0. The Pioneers will look for the two game sweep tomorrow afternoon as they host Franklin Pierce back at the Rinks in Shelton at 2:30 p.m.

First Period

The Pioneers were outshot by the Ravens in the opening period 8-5.
But that didn't impact the score as SHU jumped on the board first as senior Olivia Bryant rocketed her third goal of the year passed the Franklin Pierce netminder off a pair of assists by first-year Sophie Lupone and junior Juliana Lynch just 9:45 into the period to put SHU ahead 1-0.
SHU halted the Raven power-play on two occasions to prevent Franklin Pierce from scoring in the opening period.
The Pioneers also dominated the faceoff battle in the first period as SHU took seven face-off wins while Franklin Pierce took four.

Second Period

Both sides each tallied eight shots on goal in the period.
Neither side was able to score in the period as Franklin Pierce went 0-3 on the power-play while SHU went 0-1.
SHU had a chance to break the game open to a 2-0 as Maddie Bishop drew a penalty in the shooting area allowing a penalty shot for the senior but her penalty shot was saved keeping the game 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Third Period

The Pioneers dominated the final period as SHU fired off eight shots on goal while holding Franklin Pierce to just four.
SHU tallied two goals in third period first coming off the stick of senior Maddie Bishop off an assist by sophomore Kelly Solak just 5:53 into the period to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.
Then in the closing minutes of the period, 17:10 with the goalie out as well as the Ravens on the power-play, the 6-3 edge for Franklin Pierce was no match for sophomore Anna Klein as she found empty net off an assist by Jayne Lewis to propel the Pioneers to a 3-0 shutout of the Ravens.

Notes

Three Pioneers each tallied a goal in the shutout.
Sophomore Frankie Sanchez recorded 20 saves on 20 shots faced for her third shutout win of the year.
SHU now rides an eight game win streak and gains another point to remain in first place in the NEWHA standings.
SHU improves to 16-10-0 overall and 13-2-0 in NEWHA play.
