
Women's Ice Hockey Announces 2019-20 Team Awards

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team announced their 2019-20 annual team awards this afternoon.
A total of 24 members of the team received the Dr. Ruth M. Grant Academic Achievement Award which featured Maddie Bishop, Olivia Bryant, Katie Calliguri, Rachel DeLong, Elizabeth Furfari, Victoria Grimmer, Nicole Guidi, Charlotte Huntington, Natalie Kennedy, Anna Klein, Marissa Letizio, Jayne Lewis, Sophie Lupone, Julianna Lynch, Jordan Manning, Gina Moriello Cassandra Nevers, Alexa Ocel, Jordan Sanislo, Samantha Shoebottom, Kelly Solak, Kennedy Spiering, Cannady Taleghani and Kayla Walewski. This award is presented annually to the players who have achieved as an underclassman a term grade point average of 3.5 or better, or as a senior a term or cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Sophomore Alexa Ocel received the teams Most Improved Player Award is voted on by the members of the team, and it is presented annually to the teammate who clearly demonstrated a desire to improve her game, and add to the success of this team. She skated in 32 games last season while racking up five goals on 11 assists for 16 points. Due to her impressive play, she was named the NEWHA All-Rookie Team.
Gina Moriello and Olivia Bryant were given the Players Player Award This award is voted on by the players and presented annually to the team member that was there for her teammates. This player held high the standards and values of this hockey program and therefore was the consummate teammate and player.
Maddie Bishop earned the Commitment to Excellence and Valor Award. Bishop last season earned First Team All-NEWHA Honors tallying a career high 11 goals on 19 assists for 30 points. She was also drafted in the seventh round by local NWHL team Connecticut Whale. This award is voted on by the players and recognizes the player or players, whose commitment and dedication can best be described as giving an honest day's work.
Moriello, Bryant and Bishop each also earned the Sheryl Madison Pioneer Award. This award recognizes the qualities of leadership, character and what is typical of being a Sacred Heart University Pioneer Women's Hockey Player.
Jayne Lewis and Frankie Sanchez clinched the teams Most Outstanding Player Award as Lewis was named NEWHA Player of the Year as well as earning First Team All-NEWHA honors. She racked up a career high 22 goals on 13 assists for 35 points. Three of those goals were scored on November 16, 2019 against Franklin Pierce for her first career hat-trick. Sanchez also had a dominate year earning a career 2.64 GAA while recording 19 wins three of which were shutouts.
To round out the awards were the Senior Division 1 Builders Award winners which featured Marissa Letizio, Gina Moriello, Victoria Grimmer, Jayne Lewis, Maddie Bishop and Olviia Bryant. This award is presented annually to the seniors, on the team that has contributed everything they had to help build this team into a flourishing and viable Division 1 hockey program.
