Wood, Pryor and Johnson join Pioneers as 2022 signing class
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team signed three newcomers on Wednesday to National Letters of Intent, announced by Head Coach Jessica Mannetti. The Pioneers welcome Sierra Johnson, Ny'Ceara Pryor and Amelia Wood.
"This 2022 signing class is comprised of three extremely talented, competitive and high character young women," said Mannetti. "They will immediately add to the depth of our guard play as well as contribute to our teams' academic success with their high ambitions in the classroom. I am looking forward to coaching and developing them as players and people upon their arrival at SHU!"
Johnson is a 5-foot-8 guard from Richmond, Va. She is a four-year starter and 1,000 point scorer for TPLS Christian Academy, averaging 7.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Johnson also competed in AAU for VA Havoc. Off the court, she received national honors for earning a 3.5 grade point average in the classroom.
"Sierra is a steal for the Pioneers," said Mannetti. "She is a strong and versatile guard who will bring both a high motor and vocal presence to the court. Additionally, she is a student of the game, bringing a high IQ and skill set to the floor."
Pryor is a 5-foot-3 guard from Baltimore, MD. A standout for Western High School, she was a part of the team's back-to-back regional championships in 2019 and 2020. Pryor has received numerous accolades, including Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Off the court, she is a member of the National Honors Society and received honor distinctions.
"Ny'ceara is a quick, scoring minded point guard who will thrive in our dribble drive system," said Mannetti. "She is a natural court leader and a fierce competitor who can push tempo and score or setup her teammates to score in a variety of ways."
Wood is a 6-foot guard from Wynantskill, N.Y. She currently plays for Averill Park High School and is the sister of Sacred Heart sophomore forward Kelsey Wood. Last season she was named a Class A All-State Player as well as Suburban Council and Section 2 All-Star. She has helped lead her team to three sectional titles and also joined her sister as one of three players in school history to score 1,000 points. Off the court, she was named to the honor roll and is a member of the Student-Athlete advisory council.
"Amelia is a long and athletic combo guard who can score at all three levels," said Mannetti. "She is very explosive off the dribble and can shoot the three from deep. Most impressively, she plays to win and never lets anyone outwork her on the floor."
Sacred Heart hosts Brown for its home opener on Sunday, November 14 at 3:30 p.m.
